Grace's Birthday Lunch -Valentino

Brought Grace to Ristorante Da Valentino for her birthday lunch. This time, we ordered the day;s special of pan-fried parma ham with mozzarella cheese and sautéed bouquet of mushrooms for our appetizers.

Though the pan-fried parma ham with mozzarella cheese sounded really interesting. I felt that its description didn’t do justice to the dish. Rather, the dish was tasty but it stopped there.; I also felt that parma ham was meant to be eaten without much cooking which would mar its delicate taste.

The sautéed mushrooms were much better-it was a mixture of wild mushrooms sautéed with clarified butter which turned them into buttery morsels that slide down smoothly down your throat.

As for our mains, I opted for the seafood aglio olio which was on the menu. I applaud them for bringing the best out from this simple pasta dish. From the homemade pasta to the pure olive oil steeped in aromatic garlic flavour to the generous array of the freshest seafood that were lightly sautéed without losing any bit of its fresh goodness. I found my perfect aglio olio.

Grace ordered the pesto linguine and J ordered his current favourite of seafood risotto. Both of them liked their mains very much.

Desserts at P.S Café

With that, we left to Dempsey for dessert at P.S Café. The first time J and I were there was during our third month which was such a long time ago! We had the brunch which was good albeit on the expensive side. This time, we headed to the sweets section to round up our meal with delightful sweets.

However, though the cakes look decent and rather appetizing, I couldn’t say the same for its taste. I chose this place partly because I heard that it has good desserts. The chocolate cake with its thick frosting was way too sweet plus it came with chocolate sauce and “vanilla-flavoured” ice cream which made the dessert overpoweringly sweet. The cake itself was pretty dense and the frosting was more sugary in flavour without any trace of cocoa flavour.

The other cake was named “flourless orange cake”. With a name like that, you would have expected the cake to be light, however, the name was hardly accurate when in fact it was a polenta (Cornmeal) cake! I’;m not a fan of polenta, in any case, the texture was grainy and dense and the orange caramel syrup was again too sweet. And so, our meal ended off with us being doused in too much sugar without being on a sugar high!
